Internet connection hangs up

Hello everybody!
I hope I'm at the right place here... I just installed
Windows Xp on a brand new ibm machine...
I have problems with internet explorer and outlook
express and outlook and every application which needs a
connection to the isp.
If I make the connection, then open internet explorer or
outlook, all works fine.
But if I open internet explorer or outlook without
opening first the connection, internet explorer or
outlook just hangs up and I have to stop them with the
tast manager...
Any idea?

When you say it hangs up, do you mean it freezes if you open internet explorer or outlook express without first connecting to the internet through your ISP connection?

Yes, I mean that... anybody can help me?
