internet connection goes dead

my internet connection seems to go dead after my computer has been on for a
while (sometimes 6 hours, sometimes 5 minutes), giving no indication that
anything is wrong except the fact that i can't load any webpages or run any
programs that require internet access

the only thing that seems to be common to these occurrences is that when i
restart the computer (sometimes, presumably, several hours after the
connection has died and sometimes within a few seconds of noticing it has
died), the little yellow "downloading updates" thing shows up in my system
tray, leading me to believe that maybe the two events are connected (though i
have tried disabliing the automatic updtaes and it still happens)?

anybody have any insight into this?

sorry, failed to specify, cable modem is definitely still connected and
working when my computer's connection dies, as is the router, as evidenced by
the fact that other computers remain connected

also, windows "downloading updates" icon appears AFTER the computer has
restarted in case that's not clear

thanks

Open Device Manager, open the properties on your ethernet card or USB
ports if your NIC is plugged into USB, click the Power tab, and deselect
"Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

yeah i tried that (for the record it is a card in the back of my computer)

same problem persists

again, it's weird because i never see the little yellow "downloading
updates" thing, like, ever, except right after windows starts up, often after
i've restarted because i seem to suddenly no longer be connected to the
internet, for no apparent reason
