Internet connection and network

I somehow just lost my internet connection on one machine that is connected
to a router and cable modem.. I have checked all settings that I know of and
cannot correct it. I do notice that under properties of the connection, it
lists an IP address which is not correct. I cannot find the setting to
actual see where this address is coming from though. I am set to
"automatically' set ip address, but it should and was a 192.168 number since
it connects to a router. I see that "winipcfg" does not work in WinXP. Waht
is the command in WinXP that replaces "winipcfg"? Can anyone advise why I
can no longer connect. I am setup for the same workgroup . Thanks

P.S. You can assign a static address for testing purposes, e.g.,
192.168.1.2/24 <== means subnet mask of 24 bits or 255.255.255.0. Gateway
address is the router address.

Then try pinging the gateway (router). You may need to turn off any
firewalls.

You may want to try the cable connection sequence.
1 - power down your PC.
2 - power down your cable modem, remove power connection.
3 - Wait one minute.
4 - reconnect power to modem wait for all lights to come
on.
5 - boot up pc again.

If this worked the IP has been re-established

Next if your machine has much malware/spyware it is
possible your winsock.dll file has been corrupted.

Scan and remove spyware first

In that case visit Kellys Korner, look for her XP
utilities and fixes, you are looking for the winsock
repair tool.

I did as you said and was able to ping that machine, but pinging the other
one on the network would time out. I would appreciate any additional help.
also, when figured automatically, why would the Ip not be 192.168.... I saved
previous copies of IPconfig which did show it configured automatically with
the proper IP address. I have left it manually configured as you said with
the IP 192.168.1.2. and subnet 255.255.255.0

Thank you very much for your assistance. The fix that Richie NY suggested
worked for me.

Thank you very much. That worked and everything is back. It never occurred
to me to reset everything. Thanks again.
