Internet Access Problem

I am running Windows XP Pro on a home PC. 1Ghz AMD Duron
Processor with 384 Mgs of SDRAM. I have installed a brand
new Linksys Ethernet Card and a brand new V92 Modem from
Agere. I have checked all settings and the card and the
modem are installed and operating. I cannot get on the
web. I connect to the Internet through a DSL modem. I
cannot get an Ethernet light to come on. I cannot ping any
IP Address. I cannot renew an ip address. I am getting
ready to reinstall my operating system. I tried to
reinstall my TCP/IP stack and still not connecting.

What are your instructions from your ISP? You don't need an internal pci
computer modem for dsl! You should have received 1) a dsl "modem" from
the ISP, along with various filters to plug into all phone jacks that
have working phones (assuming your voice line is the same line as the
dsl number); 2) you should have a NIC (the Linksys); 3) you should have
some cat5e cable that goes from the dsl modem to the NIC; 4) a phone
cable (flat silver type) that goes from the dsl port on the dsl modem
to a telephone wall jack. You may need to run software from your ISP,
or just set your computer up to use ppoe. Again, the V92 modem is
completely unnecessary and not involved in any way. Re-read whatever
instructions came with your modem. Post back with details, including
what you've done and the name of your ISP, if you want more help.

Agreed. Maybe even a technician to come out and install it.

I tried my phone both with and without the line filters. I noticed no
difference in voice OR data transmission/quality without the filters
so got rid of them. I guess YMMV here.

This only applies if you are using an EXTERNAL DSL modem. They do
make internal DSL modems as well; in that case a NIC and cat5 cable
aren't necessary. Also remember that some external DSL modems are USB
compatable and don't need a NIC.

Agreed. The ISP can help with all this, if they are worth a shit.

Agreed. Why do you have the v92 modem? If you want to use it for
it's fax send/receive capability, that's fine, but you won't need it
in any way for your DSL connection.
