Four computers in my network:

Two hard wired

One wireless Laptop gets the internet and the LAN working fine.

Desktop machine gets the internet but cannot see other computers on the LAN.

Error message is "The network path was not found"

Windows firewall is on. Same problem when it's off

Workgroup is correct.

It had been working fine until now

I'd bet you have a second firewall, or another security product, that's
misconfigured. What about your AT / AV protection?

You could look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the problem
computer, and from 2 others, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and
linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

IPCONFIG shows Node type as "unknown"

I tried to change it to HYBRID in registry

HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\NetBT\Parameter\ Node type
It was set at 4 (mixed), I changed it to 8 (hybrid).

On reboot Node type did not change.

IPCONFIG release and renew also failed to change the Node type

Inspection of the registry shows is as 8.

It's fixed.

The way I didn't want to do it.

I did a system restore and IPCONFIG reported
Node Type : Mixed
IP Routing: NO
WINS proxy enabled: NO

The rest of the network machines are back!

Not too indicative of what the problem was, but if you're operational, I'm happy
for you.
