International Characters

Hello There,

I have the following situation:
For almost two years I used the International Characters (I don’t use them
everyday) without any problems, however the last month I realized that I was
unable to insert a Spanish character in my documents even thought the Toolbar
showed them. I un-installed and reinstalled the International Characters to
try to correct this issue however it didn’t help.
Now, the International Characters doesn’t show in the Toolbar list therefore
I cannot add them.
One interesting thing is that The International Characters work so well in
Microsoft PowerPoint.
All your comments will be appreciated.

Are you talking about Word? It doesn't have a feature called
specifically "International Characters."

Do you want to type ordinary Western European languages with accented
letters? That's real easy. Do you want to type other European
languages with less common accented letters? That's only a little less
easy.

Or do you want to type languages that don't use the roman alphabet at
all?

Hello Grammatin,

I used the International Characters in Microsoft Word 2003. The options I
used to use were Spanish and French.

Maybe it's some kind of add-in.

All the Spanish and French (and German and Scandinavian) accented
letters are easily typed from the keyboard:

Ctri+ the closest-looking keyboard character, release, and type the
letter (cap or small): ' for acute(and the Icelandic crossed-d!), `
for grave, , for cedilla, / for crossed-o, ^ for circumflex, : for
umlaut, ~ for tilde (for the last three, remember to shift!)

For less often used items like ae and oe and German double-s, it's
the
&; for the Scandinavian a-ring, it's @. The Spanish punctuation marks
are Ctrl-Alt-! or ?.

I suppose you are referring to the International Characters toolbar, that you
can get here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d2-39a4-4a01-8382-dfe35bcbac03&displaylang=en

I'm not sure if this is related, but I've had some users report lately that
they are having trouble spell-checking in different languages.

We found that if you try and spell-check in a language that is diffferent
than the one you have set on the first tab of your Regional and Language
options, that it will not work. This just started happening within the last
1 or 2 months.

We found that you must add a keyboard for the language in question (Regional
options | Second Tab) and that you need to make sure that you have the
language added through the Microsoft Office 2003 (or 2007) Language Settings
(usually found under Start | Programs | Microsoft office | Microsoft Office
tools | Microsoft office 2003 Language settings). You may also have to set
the language for the text you are inserting.

I hope this is helpful.

Could be! I know I had to uninstall it after loading the 2007 compatibility
pack due to some irratic behavior.

Thanks to all that have been replied.
Two years ago I downloaded the ict_usEN.exe from Microsoft web site and it
worked great and kept a copy of the ict_usEN.exe for future use.
A month ago the International Character toolbar was there but I was unable
to add the Spanish or French characters to my Microsoft Word documents. I
tried fixing it, what I did was un-install and re-install the International
Characters add-inn, during this process the International Characters toolbar
is gone and there is no way to add it to the Microsoft Word however it work
good for my Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.

I’m still using Microsoft Office 2003 and used the same ict_usEN.exe file
when I re-installed the International Characters add-inn.

If you uninstalled and reinstalled it, then the toolbar should re-appear in
Word unless the Addin is not checked or becoming disabled. You could check
Tools | Templates and addins to see if it is checked there. Disabled items
appear under Help | About Microsoft word | Disabled items button. If
anything appears here, enable it!

I enabled the International Characters from the Disabled Item button. I
closed and reopened Microsoft Word 2003 and I still unable to see the
International Characters under View --> Toolbars
Under Tools --> Templates and Add-ins --> Templates, I only have
HistClient.dot
