internal modem

I have an external modem, and am getting a modem card. With my external
modem, if there is a problem, which I can tell by looking at the lights,
I just power off the modem and power on. I believe that with an internal
modem, one has to reboot. Is there any way other than rebooting to shut
off the internal modem in case of some problem?
