Internal DNS problems and w2k DNS

R

Roy Lawson

I am running in mixed mode. I have an NT4 BDC that runs DNS for our
websites. I have Active Directory / DNS used for internal resolution
on a Windows 2000 domain controller and a Windows 2003 domain
controller (PDC emulator).

I am by no means a DNS genious, but every morning when I get back in
the office I am unable to resolve any websites that are listed on our
public DNS server. I am able to reach those websites from an external
location (like home). In otherwords, the public DNS server works
fine.

In order to resolve this, I simply clear the cache on the 2000/2003
servers and it is up and running again internally.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Does the Win2k DNS have copies of the NT4 zones?
Are both of these DNS servers behind NAT? Behind the same NAT?

I am not behind NAT (small network, everyone with public IPs) but will
soon be implementing it. The Win2k DNS does not have a copy of the
NT4 zone. All the servers are on the same subnet.

Thanks for the reply.

If you don't have a copy of the zones on Win2k then it has to use recursion
to find the domains on the NT4. You probably should have a secondary copy on
the Win2k if you convert to private IPs with NAT you'll have to put a copy
of the zones on the Win2k.
