Intermittent Sounds

I am using xp home. My sound cards seems to be working fine but I keep
hearing loud intermittent Pinging sounds.I used control panel, sounds and
audio devices and then properties. on the drop down menu I inserted "No
sounds" but I still keep hearing these noises. Any ideas how to rid myself
of them, they are driving me crazy.Thanks jimjay

Another thing to try: Do a search for *.wav and test each sound. When
the offending sound is located, see what program folder it's stored in.
Change the preferences within the program that uses this annoying sound.
