Intermittent name resolution

[Dr Zoidberg]

We have a few machines set up in a lab here with static IP addresses.
They have static entries in DNS and if you do an NSLOOKUP they are correctly
resolved.
If on the other hand you try and ping them by name you get a Host not found.

Any idea why this might be happening?
