INTERMITTANT COMPUTER SLOW DOWN

LAST FRIDAY 07-14-06 MY COMPUTER/WINDOWS XP PRO SLOWED DOWN TO WHERE IT WOULD
NOT LET THE MOUSE MOVE AT TIMES. THE PROBLEM PERSISTED FOR 4 HOURS THEN GOT
BETTER THEN WENT BAD AGAIN. I HAD A COMPUTER TECH COME OVER THAT EVENING,
WHEN HE GOT THERE THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY AND HE COULD NOT DIAGNOSE IT. HE IS
SUGGESTING WE REFORMAT THE COMPUTER AND RELOAD XP. I HATE TO DO THAT BECAUSE
I THINK IT IS FIXABLE.
THIS MORNING ONE WEEK LATER I EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM AGAIN. I OPENED
WINDOWS TASK MANAGER AND THE PERFORMANCE SCREEN, THE GRAPH SHOWED CPU USAGE
AT 100% AND THE HISTORY ALSO SHOWED A SPIKE UP TO 100%. IT BOUNCED ALONG
THAT TOP RANGE FOR A WHILE AND THEN WENT DOWN. TWO OTHER COMPUTERS IN THE
OFFICE ARE NOT ACTING LIKE THAT.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO FIX THIS?

Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if you type normally, in mixed
case.

The most common cause these days of such a problem is infestation with
viruses, spyware, and adware. What anti-virus program do you run? Is it kept
up to date? What anti-spyware/anti-adware programs (plural, because one
isn't enough) do you run? Are they up to date?

Spent a lot of time with a Microsoft Technician who helped me considerably.
Focused on 4 areas, we worked three. Last one is spyware and virus. I can
do that one.

I am using Norton for virus and Trendware for spyware. I found some bad
spyware and had that corrected. Big problem is the slow down is
intermittant.

There was a one week interval between the slow downs. If next Friday goes
by without a misshap I will be singing praises. I also have some bad sectors
in my hard drive that can not be repaired. Will be looking for a new hard
drive to install.

Thanks for being more gracious about the all caps. Had no idea and I
apologize to all that were offended. Takes so little to offend us these
days. Even a short retort can also be offensive. Thanks for your grace.

You're welcome. It's not so much that all caps is offensive. It's that if
feels like you're shouting and it's very hard to read. Many people won't
even bother to take the extra time to try to read an all caps message. If
the message is long enough, I usually skip all caps messages myself.

If you've cleaned up some spyware, great. I hope your problem is gone. But
be aware that a single anti-spyware product is usually not sufficient. Note
what Eric Howes, who has done extensive testing on Anti-Spyware
products, states:

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the best-performing
anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one quarter of the
"critical" files and Registry entries"
