Intensive data processing without apparent cause?

Occasionally my computer starts intensively processing data, even though i am
not using any hard programs (such as as virus scanning, graphics rendering
etc.).

I feel that Vista Premium may be archiving all of the files on my hard drive
or something.

What ever it is. How can I disable it because i don't appreciate it bursting
into intensive data processing for seemingly no reason.

It's not programs checking for updates either.

Hi,

Most likely the indexing service as it catalogs the files on your system.
This is a low priority service that actually serves to speed things up, it
should not interfere with your use of the machine. If this machine is fairly
new, the activity level will be high but eventually slows to a point where
it goes mostly unnoticed. Additions of new software or programs will elevate
activity temporarily as well.

In addition, it could also be the system creating shadow copies and this
should also be a low priority service that does not interfere with day to
day operations. It should not be disabled, as it is this service that makes
recovery from damage possible.

I'm not complaining of it interfering. I'm complaining about it doing it when
i don't want it to do it. Whether it's a shadow copy issue or an archiving
issue, i don't want either to just randomly start up in the background and
start intensive processing.

Why on earth not? It's not affecting you in any way, is it? Operating
systems frequently do housekeeping tasks automatically. It's completely
normal.

I suggest you get an and do your thing - whatever it is - with your
computer, and let Vista get on with its own thing. It's designed like that.

What time a day have you chosen for the Disk Defragmenter to run? Again it
is in the backgound.

Because it's my computer and i will run maintainence such as disk defrag when
i want to. I have no use for the shadow copy feature, nor will i ever use the
archiving feature. It is anoying having it going off in the background with
no way for me to stop it.

start>run>msconfig
do that and kill the indexing and turn useless start items off and shut down
non windows features and you'll boost your performance at least 30% and then
your pc will sit just as quiet as a mouse till you ant it to do something
keeping all the indexing and crap runnig is for noob users that dont know
what there missing

Thankyou, the dark.

I think it may be a "Nero" archiving problem, as i have already previously
disabled "shadow copy", yet it's back intensively processing again.
