Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 mouse wheel doesn't click

I just bought a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 4.0

The first thing I noticed right out of the box was that the mouse wheel doesn't make the
usual clicking sound. It just turns smoothly without making any sound. Scrolling is just
horrible.

Is this normal?

That's normal for the Intellimouse Explorer 4.0.
It doesn't click. It's called smooth scrolling
