Intellimouse 5.2?

Some time ago the number of postings reporting problems with Intellimouse
5.0 were so great that I avoided the change. Now I see v5.2 is out. Does
anyone know if this is a safe and sound version of the drivers?

I have:
Optical Trackball
USB connected
Windows XP/SP2 Home

Problem, occasionally my mouse pointers get confused with the wrong symbol,
such as the cross hairs instead of the arrow. It goes away when I go to
Control Panel/Mouse and select a different set of pointers, apply, then
select the original set (3D Bronze), and apply.

It is just an annoyance but little problems could be the beginning of a
bigger one.

I have never installed a mouse driver and my mice over the years work
fine. I currently using a Logitech wireless optical 3-button mouse
without any problems. Microsoft mouse drivers, in general, cause more
problems such as conflicts with other programs including M$ Word and Excel.

If the mouse works fine in Windows using the native/default drivers, I
would not install M$ IntelliMouse driver. I stopped using M$ mice due
to these problems. I have yet to experience any conflicts or problem
with the Logitech wireless optical mouse I use now in XP.

IP_52 has been out a long time, so it's stable.

Check the MS Mouse site and make sure 5.2 is the recommended driver for
your trackball (it is for my TB Explorer, and my control panel does list
the TB Optical model as well, so I suspect it is).

Do you need it?

Only if you use the advanced features, like reassigning the buttons in
various applications. And using the two extra buttons of course. [My
guess is the answer is therefore "Yes"!].

If you don't then it's just extra baggage (tho in my Task Manager listing
it only uses 975K, not very much at all really).

Bottom line: 5.2 has worked just fine for me.

Thanks for the review. I am on the old version 4.2 I think. I am hope that
the new version will stop the occasional pointer stick. It happens about
every couple of days but makes me think something needs to be done.
