Intel express bios update - no Pri Ide?

I just installed the most recent BIOS update for a D865PERL from Intel using
their Express BIOS Update feature. All went well as far as BIOS updating.
But the system would not boot to Windows XP-SP2. It would go through the
boot process and then go into MBA (LAN) and end with "Reboot and select
proper boot device". Reason: Primary IDE channel grayed out in BIOS under
Drive Config menu. Secondary channel recognized. I tried several changes to
try and get the BIOS to see the Pri IDE (changing ATA/IDE to "Legacy", PRI
only, SEC only, Pre Delay). Once it recognized the PRI IDE but the SEC IDE
went gray, so I set the boot order to PRI IDE but no boot - everything in
BIOS was back to PRI IDE grayed out.
I got frustrated and walked away and when I came back the damned thing had
booted. I writing from my system now. What's the deal with that?
I'm going to shut down and reboot after this post. Maybe I'll be back....

An Update: Now in the BIOS I have the ATA/IDE config set to Legacy - Pri and
Sec (used
to be Enhanced). The primary channel is recognized but the secondary channel
is not (grayed). I set the boot order to do HDD before MBA and it boots
regularly, but there is no boot option for either optical drive on the
secondary IDE. But the optical devices work in Windows.

Any advice on how to solve this behavior?

this is only a guess but it sounds like you upgraded with the wrong bios or
you did not on first boot, go into the bios a setup defaults then reboot and
set it up the way it was.

Thanks Jim. That was it. I had to enter setup (optimal) defaults (F9) and
then go back in and reset it to my personal preferences. Everything is good
now.
