This is really not a home built PC but I figured this group would have the
most all around PC knowledge. The PC is a Gateway, model # MFATXPNTNMZ500SE.
The motherboard is an Intel D845GRG.
I was called to service this PC which is networked into a very large home. I
found out the hard drive had been removed. Also, I really don't have much
experience in setting up or troubleshooting networks so maybe this is where
I am stuck. Most of my clients use stand alone Windows pc's hooked up to
their DSL or cable modems for internet.
I turned on the PC and the first screen of course said no hard drive found
and prompted me to hit, "ctrl alt b" to configure the boot system so I did.
The setup menu had the following choices:
PXE, TCP/IP, Netware, RPL. I left it alone since I wasn't sure what that was
supposed to do and the following text appeared on the screen and is
something I've never seen before:
Managed PC Boot Agent (MBA) v4.30 (build 3)
Supported NIC: 3com 10/100 Ethernet NIC (v2.32) (c) Copyright 2000 Lanworks
Technologies Co. a subsidiary of 3Com Corporation. All rights reserved.
versions:
Main: v1.21, Loader: v3.05
Bootware: v2.11
AI: v1.02
PXE: v2.30 (base code build 79)
Config: v1.30
UNDI: v2.32, Loader: v3.05
Vendor
evice: 10B7:9200
Bootware type: 109 (6Dh)
Settings: 00020421
Defaults: 00000000
EEprom: FFFFFFFF
Please reboot your system
So I reboot and did not hit "ctrl alt b" I got the following text:
Intel (R) Boot Agent Version 4.0.22
Copyright (c) 1997-2001, Intel Corporation
Intel Base-Code, PXE-2.0 (build 083)
Copyright (c) 1997-2001, Intel Corporation
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot
device.
I opened the computer and set the cmos jumper to config and then I got a
fairly normal looking boot setup menu.
Silent Boot: Enabled
Intel (R) Rapid Bias Boot: Enabled
PXE Boot to LAN: Enabled <-- ??? Don't know what this means.
USB Boot: Enabled
Other boot settings:
1st boot device: Atapi CD Rom.
2nd boot device: [Removable Dev.]
3rd boot device: [IBA 4.0.22 Slot 014] <-- ??? Don't know what this means.
Can somebody give me a general idea of what is going on here other than the
hard drive is missing? Is this system supposed to boot off of the network?
Could this system actually be used without its own hard drive?
Thanks for your reply.
