Intel 975X with Core2Duo E6850 bootup issues

I have just bought an Intel 975X motherboard and a Core2Duo E6850 processor,
and when I try to boot is up, the fan whirrs for ages, and the screen stays
black, and the system speaker doesn't make the usual beep.

I tried the motherboard with my old processor, which works fine, so I am now
wondering if either:
1) the Processor is not compatible, despite being the same socket set
2) The PSU is powerful enough to support the processor
3) the Processor is damaged

Any ideas?

According to Intel the 1333 MHz FSB E6850 is unsupported on the D975XBX2.

for f****s sake, these were recommend by a magazine as the best options. How
can they suggest that if it is not compatible! thats £450 down the drain!

What motherboard would be compatible?

Those should be compatible.

This is a micro-ATX board with onboard graphics which supports the E6850
using BIOS 0559 or higher.

The DP35DP supports your processor using BIOS 0267 or higher.

Of the two Intel motherboards above, the DP35DP is better featured.

Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 (rev. 3.3)

Asus P5N-E SLI

Asus P5K series
http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=534

Note: some motherboards based on the Intel P35 chipset require DDR3 memory.

Finally, might you consider parting with the E6850 keeping the 975X
motherboard ?

That motherboard came out almost a year before the CPU did, so it may not be
compatible. At some risk, you might try installing a newer BIOS.

I wouldn't take every item on the returned list, as a good alternative.
A 945 running at FSB1333 ? I bet that doesn't have any headroom left...

Gigabyte lists mainly P35 motherboards for the E6850, while Asus
has a mix of the older P965 boards and newer P35 boards. The Asus P5W DH Deluxe
(a 975X board) is also in the Asus list, which begs the question as to
why the Intel board cannot follow in its footsteps.

For more info on motherboard choices, I'd look in the Intel forum here:
They have a working search feature, so you can narrow your search.
