I recently upgraded a Dell L700xi PC from Win Me to XP. I ran the hardware
compatibility advisor which said there were no problems. I ran it off of a
Win XP home upgrade w/ SP2 CD. I updated the bios to the latest version.
Everything was fine except the video was 640 X 480 and 4 bit color and not
adjustable. The event log showed no errors or warnings, the device manager
indicated the device was working properly (no yellow asterisk) and showed the
same model graphics card.
I tried it again with a clean installation and again with a Win XP pro SP2
CD with the same results. I tried it a 4th time with a WinXP Pro SP1 CD and
the video was as it should be. When I ran the SP2 update, the video went back
to 640X480 and 4 bit color and stayed that way until I removed SP2 and then
all was right in the world. By the way, Dell showed no drivers available for
this model with Win XP and drivers drom the Intel site gave the same bad
results. I experienced the same issues with 2 HP Pavilions with 82810
integrated graphics. Why is this happening. One of the HPs came with XP home
(no service pack). and the results were all the same.

Try the following procedure:

Open your Control Panel and click on the "Add Hardware" icon.
The "Add Hardware Wizard" will appear.

1. Click on Next and place a dot next to "Yes, I have already connected the hardware".
2. Click Next and scroll all the way down to "Add a new hardware device".
3. Click once to highlight it and click Next.
4. Place a dot next to "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)".
5. Click Next and scroll down to "Display Adapters", click once to highlight and click Next.
6. Click once on "Intel Corporation", then click once on "Intel(R) 82810 Graphics Controller"
and click Next.
7. Reboot your PC.

Afterward, right-click on your Desktop and select:
Properties > Setting and adjust your Screen Resolution
settings, then select "Highest (32 bit) Color Quality setting,
and click "apply".
