Hi

At work we have about 250 pc's with intel 10/100 pro ve on board nic
card with the ability to WAKE ON LAN.

My problem is if i do a start ==>shutdown the next time i try to use
wake on lan it will work ok

but if i shut down with the power button, and if i then try wake on
lan it will not work.

This is a problem because I work in a school with 8000 plus students
and they all use the power button.

what is wrong with the WAKE ON LAN.

all pc's have windows xp pro

Hate to tell you..

Wake on LAN is a hardware issue. Doesn't matter your OS. You may want to
contact the motherboard manufacturer, the PC manufacturer or Intel directly.

If you shut down via the "power button", you are turning off the power. It
cannot "wake on LAN'" because the power has been turned off. Not to mention,
improper shutdown can destroy the hard drive in the machine.

It sounds like a Power Management issue. The Pro 100 VE drivers should
be at their latest release. In the NIC properties I would select to
allow this device to bring the PC out of Standby and allow it to
shutdown the device. Have you tried to flash the BIOS to the most
recent version? I also would verify that the BIOS is set to LAN on
from S3 and PME on. Ive had problems with the NIC not accepting the
WOL packet unless ARP was turned on in the NIC drivers. I apologize if
these settings dont exist on your card. Ive been through the ringer on
about 8 different cards and mobos trying to set these features up for
2600+ PCs.

A question that may or may not be relevant to this scenario:

When I setup WOL on 440SE BX motherboard with a 3C905C; I can get it
to WOL with a magic packet if I physically cut the power to the PC and
return it.

When I shutdown the PC normally, through Windows, I cannot get it to
WOL. The nic card has power and it has the WOL wire required for the
3c905c card.

Im not sure but maybe our two problems are somehow similar.
