When i try to install some programs a warning pops up that says

C:\WNDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXE.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications. Choose “close†to terminatge the
application.

It has two options at the bottom either ignore or close. It ill let me
install some programs but not others. any advice?

This is a recent problem that is caused by upgrading to Windows XP SP2
(Service Pack 2). Apparently, in some Systems, during the SP2
installation
important System files such as: AUTOEXEC.NT or CONFIG.NT get deleted,
causing various Applications to fail and yielding the above errors.

The same issue has been reported to also happen after a virus attack
that is messing up people's System files and it is just running rampant.
In order to protect your System, please make sure that you have the
latest virus Definitions installed for your anti-virus software program.

Please see the following from Microsoft's Knowledge Base regarding your
Windows error message:

Seems to be an epidemic lately....

This can be caused by a trojan.

Get rid of the trojan.

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Copy the autoexec.nt file from C:\Windows\Repair to C:\Windows\System32.
And set Attributes for autoexec.nt to Read-only.

Read-only
[[Specifies whether this file is read-only, which means that it cannot be
changed or accidentally deleted.]]

1. Right click the file.
2. Properties.
3. Select: Read-only.
4. Click: Apply.
5. Click: OK.
