"The first thing to understand is that the Windows Messenger Service is
completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger",
"Windows Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system.
Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon
your use of any other instant messaging applications."

To disable msn messenger try here and google has tons of methods if your not

Now I'm thoroughly confused. The OP (original problem?), was "instant
messenger" which is equal to msn messenger the chat program, I'm guessing.
But the link you privide is for disabling Windows messenger service, I'm
guessing again. Otherwise there would be three Windows messengers.

I'll figure it out, eventually.

Yes. There are three different items.

Windows Messenger (IM)
MSN Messenger (IM)
Messenger Service (a service in Windows NT/2000/XP that's responsible for
transmitting NET SEND text messages)
