i have a bizarre catastrophic error :

without warning my laptop instantly shuts off and starts rebooting -- as if
i'd performed a hard reboot

on restart system event log shows following :

source: system error
category: (102)
event id: 103
type: error
description: Error code 100000d1, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 00000002,
parameter3 00000000, parameter4 b87cab8f.

the "send info to ms" window pops up :

BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : 00000000 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 :
00000000
BCP4 : B87CAB8F OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

clicking tech details references two files which no longer exist :

C:\DOCUME~1\Balto\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER28c2.dir00\Mini052607-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Balto\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER28c2.dir00\sysdata.xml

any ideas anyone ?

Is this a recent development? Does it happen when running a particular
program or will it happen "just sitting there"? In addition to drivers...it
could be a hardware problem. Over-heating (bad cooling fan, blocked vent
holes) or a defective RAM module could cause this. I have seen bad AC
adapters cause this (produces intermittant voltage fluctuation causing
laptop to reboot). If your laptop has two RAM modules, you could try
removing one at a time to see if/when the problem goes away.

That's not a fun problem to have...but approach it systematically. Change
one thing at a time to try and isolate the problem.

Yes, recent, just in last week . And I have noticed the fan began never
turning off relatively recently.

A couple of months ago I upgraded to 2GB RAM from 1GB ...

.... but I also have this really high end nvidia graphics chip (at time of
purchase the best graphics chip you could buy for a laptop ).

Doesn't sound good. It sounds like an overheating problem. Your laptop may
have more than one cooling fan so it's possible one of the fans is bad
(which would then make the other fan run all of the time...trying to keep
up). I think it's time for the repair shop.

I had a friend with a similar problem (his laptop would randomly shut
down)...I had him aim a portable fan at the vent intake. It turned out that
as long as he had that fan running, the laptop was fine. Not a real
*solution* but it helped isolate the cause of the problem. He needed a new
motherboard...there isn't much repairing of laptops these days,
unfortunately...just part swapping.
