Installs Fail!

What in the world could this be?

Many software installs simply halt. No warning messages at all. When I
force it to quit from task manager, I often get a 'Remote Procedure Call
Failed', other times: nothing.

Windows Updates also halt, as did a possible fix from Install Shield!
(although I doubt this would have helped since some of the installs are not
Install Shield).

This circumstance existed prior to be rebulding the machine. I have a new
boot drive, motherboard, CPUs, RAM and power supply, so it's not hardware
related. I had to reinstall all of my software, and it went fine until near
the end when this error returned. Somebody's install appears to break XP
installations.

Any ideas on how to diagnose or fix?

(WindowsXP Pro, Norton is up-to-date)

Many Thanks!

You should attempt a repair installation of XP.

Insert the XP CD.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below:

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.
Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.
Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Thanks BAR!

Looks like I'm not the only one. I'll share your advice.

Actually, the first option I have is whether to 'Upgrade' or 'New Install'
(and lose all of my settings).

Which should I chose?

Thanks again!
