the setup routine hangs at "windows executive" step...
which is real early... like the first write to the hard
drive...

this is a new machine i'm building, so there are no
existing operating systems on it.

new machines means you shall format the hard disk first
with bootable floopy of any windows 9x os operating
systems.
go to your friends machine an make bootable disk from there
alos check that all hardware components are proerly
installed.
