I use an iMac; I'd installed Windows XP in Boot Camp, but was never able to
make it work properly (couldn't connect to the Internet). I still have the
disk, and want to install to set it up with VirtualBox on the Mac, but I
can't find the packaging which included the registry key - still have the
booklet which says the key should be attached to the back cover, but it
isn't. Is there a way to recover the registry?

Thanks -

Open the booklet. See the Product Key ? It's a 25 letter/number combination.

It's on the "back cover" if you flip that page to the right.
The installation CD is now on the left.
Right ?

If you are referring to the "Product Key" that you must enter when
installing Windows, you have three options.

1. If you still have the install of Windows in the virtual box, you can use
a key extractor like Magical Jellybean Keyfinder.

2. Find the key that came with your disk.

3. Purchase a new copy of XP.
