Installing XP

Has anyone seen this before and if so how do I fix it.
I'm upgrading my machine from win 2000 sp3 to win XP sp1 the install is fine
only asks for one driver viaide.sys. I have this on a seperate cd so I point
the install to it and everything is fine. The problem is after the install
has finished the machine auto reboots I then get the blue screen of death.
The error code suggests that the hdd controller is there or corrupt. I don't
understand this as the installation worked fine.

if you have a cd with the proper motherboard drivers on it ...install those
...or get the latest from the mfr's website

I would save all of my data files, etc., boot from the XP CD, format
the drive with the option provided, and perform a clean installation of
XP, because Win2000 SP3 to WinXP SP1 is a peculiar upgrade.

You have to have the CD drive set as the first boot device in the BIOS
in order to boot from the XP installation CD.

Don't wait for the installation routine to ask for the IDE controller
drivers. Very early in the boot process, just after having booted from
the WinXP CD, the screen will display the words to the effect: "Setup is
examining your system." Press <F6> when this happens, and have the
*manufacturer's* WinXP-specific drivers for your IDE controller
available on a floppy disk.

I have a Gateway. Are you saying that I should be able to get WinXP specific
drivers from them? From their web site?
thanks

If you have a Gateway (or any other OEM machine like that), you always
should get all drivers (for the hardware that came with the machine
obviously, not for hardware you yourself installed) from them because
the hardware they use is normally made just for them.

Either from Gateway or from whomever manufactures the motherboard that
Gateway put in the computer, yes.
