Installing XP without CDROM access?

Bob K

Hi Everyone,

I just discovered that my bios does not support booting from the CDROM. I
moved the CDROM in the BIOS to first place and inserted my Win98 CDROM but
it just ignored it and booted as usual.

I hesitate to update my BIOS out of fear:) But I do have Win98 on a second
physical drive that I intend to keep. I also have Win98 on the target drive
for XP.

Will I be able to start the process with the Win98 and using the XP CDROM -
then telling XP to wipe the partition, etc.?

Thanks,

Bob

You can probably do as you plan but here is a safer method:
- Boot your machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Insert your WinXP CD.
- Run this command to start the installation process:
\i386\winnt

Your "test" was pointless, I'm afraid. Win98 CDs are not
bootable. That fact the option exists in your BIOS proves that the
BIOS _does_ support booting from the CD, provided there's a bootable
CD in the drive.

However, the rest of your post really doesn't seem to make any
sense to me. What are you trying to accomplish, and what does Win98
have to do with it?

Hi Bruce,

I have Win98SE installed on two physical drives: C and D.

I want to do a clean install of WinXP on the C drive while retaining the
Win98 on the D drive.

I tried to move my CDROM in the BIOS to the first boot position, put the
Win98 CD in the drive, rebooted, and found that it ignored the cdrom. So I
assume that I can't boot from a cdrom.

So, I am trying to determine how to clean install WinXP on the C drive.
Perhaps I can just leave Win98 in place, insert the WinXP cdrom, and let
WinXP clean the drive, etc.?

Does that make sense? I am trying to do it as easily as possible.

Thanks,

Bob

Bruce, sorry, I missed your point about my test being worthless. Got it. But
I wonder if I can just go with the WinXP cdrom and let it clean the drive,
etc.?
