installing XP service pack 2

L

Lynn Dougherty

Hello:

I get the automatic updates for Windows XP and have not had any problems
with it. I recently got reminded to download Service pack 2. Well, the
little icon in the right task bar has been there for over a week saying its
downloading, but still at 0%.

What's up with this? I can't get rid of the icon or don't know how.

I'm now thinking I should wait to download it (that is if it will even let
me download it). What should I do.

Thanks for your help.

do you have dialup? The sp2 download is pretty big. Go to one of the many
computer stores and get the sp2 CD. Make sure you run spyware software as
this seems to be a sticking point for many people who have problems.

CompUSA Best Buy Office Depot/Max etc. Just call ahead to see if they have
it in stock. If not you can order from Microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

as for the places that offer to install SP2 free of charge. I would be
hesitant to bring my PC to anyone and leave it there. The old "your hard
drive crashed" worry is just too big for me. If you do go this route I
would suggest doing a backup of anything you really care about and take off
any personal information. Such as emails that may have credit card numbers
or your quicken/ms money files.

Do you have a slow Internet connection speed? SP2 is actually quite large for
a dial-up connection so it would not be surprising for it to stay at 0% if
you have a slow connection.

If you want to get rid the icon/turn off automatic update, do the following:

Control Panel > Performance and Maintainance > System, under the Automatic
Updates tab, choose "Turn off Automatic Updates" and the icon you described
should disappear.

Hope that helps.

No, I am on a cable modem with a super fast brand new Dell XPS computer.
I've also heard that people are having trouble with the download, what
should I expect?

My boss had the same problem - finally he downloaded SP2 by
hand and installed it which cured the problem of the updater.

The reason the icon was there showing 0% is because a new feature on the
updates page has been added to allow u to set times to automatically update.
Just to let u know.
