Installing XP Pro

I am trying to install windows on a new HD that I just bought. I first
removed my old HD and installed the new HD. But when I tried to boot up my
computer it did not see the cd in my cd rom drive. So I was not able to do
an install of windows on my new HD. I am guessing that the driver needed to
see my cd rom drive is not their. So I have put my old drive back in, set it
as the master and set my new drive as the slave. Now can I install windows
fresh on this new drive? Then take out the old drive and reset my jumpers
accordingly? If so how do I go about doing this? Thanks in advance for the
help.

Let's start at the beginning... you want to install XP on the new hard
drive. Set the jumpers on it as master and on the old hard drive as slave.

On startup on the PC... go into the BIOS. It's often the DEL key to enter
the BIOS but can vary depending on the motherboard manufacturer.

In the BIOS ensure BOTH hard drives are recognized correctly. Set the PC to
look for bootable devices in the following order:

FDD, CD, HDD
(floppy, CD, hard drive)

Put the XP CD in the CD drive and restart the PC.

When the following message appears on the screen "Press Any Key to Boot from
CD...." press a key. Any key. The spacebar will do nicely.

Ignore the F2 to enter the Recovery Console. Go through the F8 to accept
the EULA. XP will find the new hard drive and will give you options to
partition it, format it and then will proceed with the installation of XP on
the new hard drive.

Remember that all the programs on the old hard drive will have to be
installed.. they have no registry entries in the new WindowsXP installation
so the new XP will not run them.

You may wish to format the old drive completely and do custom installs so
that most of the program is on the d:\ drive (some of the installation will
have to be on the c:\ drive such as Registry entries, common files etc, but
the majority will be on the d:\ drive.

If you've done that (and don't have a floppy in the drive) an XP
installation CD will boot. If it doesn't, perhaps you don't have
an XP installation CD but instead an OEM Restore CD.

No....... I actually paid $200 for my XP pro when windows came out. I can
get it to install if my computer is already running. But it will not install
on boot up. I een hanged mmy BIOS so that my cd rom is the it boot
option?????

The boot from CD function is a little different than some bootable CDs, in that it doesn't automatically start. Instead you will see a brief message after the BIOS screens, something like "Press any key to boot from CD". If you don't press a key then the computer goes on to a normal boot. The available time is just a few seconds so you have to pay attention.

A few monitors do not display the same screen area before Windows loads, causing the bottom line(s) of text to be off the screen. If that is the case you just have to use the controls on the monitor to shrink the display area before booting.

Also, a few motherboards now will have an option key to press to choose to get a menu of devices to boot from. You have to watch the BIOS screens to see if that is the case.
