Installing XP Pro

Hi all,

Originally I have a PC with XP pro now I have installed XP pro using
the same CD on another computer at home. I did that out of emergency
instead of purchasing another copy. During the activation peroid i
ordered another copy of XP pro and want to use the license key of the
new copy to activate the existing installation. I don't know if this
works. The new installation is already updated with SP2. The old CD
reads "NOT FOR RETAIL OR OEM DISTRIBUTION". Do I have to reinstall
using the the second purchased copy? In that case I have to install
all the applications as well and very time consuming. If I can use the
product key or another purchased copy which version of XP pro i should
buy?

Many thanks.

Provided both copies are of the same type (OEM, retail or corporate) you can
transfer the new key onto the machine. But not if they're different
install-types.

To change the key, select the "call Microsoft" option on the activation
screen (even if you don't intend to do that) There is an option there to
change the key.

Thank you Ian. Do you know "NOT FOR RETAIL OR OEM DISTRIBUTION" is of
what version?

assuming you've installed on a machine,
right click on start
left click on explore
left click on help at the top
left click on about windows
you should see the version
