installing xp pro to external drive

can I install my xp pro to an external usb 80 gig hard
drive? I had a crash recently and the tech said I should
do this so I caould still work on my computer whild drive
is being replaced.

As I mentioned in your first post:

Windows XP can only be installed on an internal drive.
You may wish to find a new "tech".

I hope you did not pay this "tech" any money - because installing Windows XP
on an external USB hard drive cannot be done.

If *you* misphrased and meant the tech told you to backup your data files
and such to the external drive - you CAN do this - usually just by copying
it over.

No I didnt, it was a guy contracted by Dell that just
showed up installed the HD and left saying "good luck"
after telling me what I said above....
How about at least using the external HD for backing up
data so if it happens again I can be up and running
quickly with no information loss

Well, you can backup to any external media you want.. DVD, USB drive, USB
thumb drive, a networked PC, tape drive, CD, etc... So yes. Copy your
stuff where-ever you want or use an application like Ghost to image the
entire system on occassion if you are so inclined.
