Installing XP Pro onto Dynamic (striped) Disks

Hi there,

Is it possible to install XP Professional on a pair of Dynamic Disks that
have been 'striped'.

If you can't install onto a previously defined pair of Dynamic Disks, is it
possible to convert the boot disk into a Dynamic Disk after installation, and
then stripe it with a second available Disk?

It seems that Windows XP will only let me create a Synamic volume across a
pair of 'unallocated' Disks. Is there any way at all to get XP Pro running
from a Dynamic Volume ??

Any assistance or tips would be much appreciated.

PS: I cannot use the on-board SATA NVRAID controller of my motherboard
because as soon as I enable it, my Promise SX4000 RAID-5 controller (where
all my data is) will no longer boot up. So I was trying to do something with
software (Dynamic Volumes) instead.

Don,

Thanks for your response. I had not found that particular document in my
searching, and had not come across the "RETAIN" function of DiskPart.

However, even using "RETAIN" it seems that it will only allow you to install
to a 'Simple' Volume, so I don't think I can do what I want.

Trevor:

That was my impression. I have decided that with winXP and my small home
LAN, RAID is probably not a good idea.

If you find a way to do this, let the group know.

cheers,

A striped volume cannot hold the system or boot partition of a Windows 2000,
XP, and 2003-based system. But it's a software RAID limitation, hardware
RAID is transparent.
