Installing XP Pro on a Tablet

Hi, all.

Has anyone ever tried installing Windows XP Pro on a
tablet PC? I have installed XP Pro on my Fujitsu ST5010
tablet, but am missing functionality in a couple of
areas: the screen won't rotate, the pen won't work,
Windows Journal is missing.

Specifically the pen, even after I installed all required
software from the hardware vendor, the pen still ceases
to work.

Has anyone found a way around this? How involved would it
be to try and get this to work?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Tom

The workaround is to only install the Tablet PC version
of Windows XP on a Tablet PC. The generic version of
Windows XP Pro was not designed to be installed on a
Tablet PC.

"Windows XP Tablet PC Edition expands on Windows XP Professional,
giving you the features and performance of the latest Microsoft operating
system for PCs, and additional capabilities for your Tablet PC."

Why would you install Windows XP Pro on a tablet PC when Windows XP Tablet
PC Edition is a SUPERset of Pro - meaning it has all the features of Windows
XP Professional PLUS it also works on Tablet PCs giving you the exact
"features" you say you are missing.

Shenan,

My corporation wants to stick with one image for all
hardware platforms. The drivers installed would depend
on the hardware selection at the time of install.

They seem intent on using XP Pro for everything. For the
tablet, they want to "build" their own flavour of XP
Tablet Edition.

I have made it clear to them that XP Pro will not work
for the Tablet PC, however they are willing to try and
get it to work.

A Tablet PC consists of an entirely different hardware compared
to a conventional desktop or notebook computer. The Tablet PC
version of Windows XP is Windows XP Pro with additional support
for Tablet PC's hardware. You will not be able to use the same
Windows XP Pro image with a Tablet PC as you have for other
PCs. It's like comparing apples with oranges!

There is no getting it to work.

You are going to be stuck with two images. It's like telling someone they
can have one installation image, but these systems over here must only have
Linux, these over here Mac OS 10.3, these over here Windows XP Professional,
these over here Windows XP Home, these over here Windows XP Media Edition,
these over here Windows XP Tablet Edition, these Windows 2000 Professional.
It isn't going to happen.

Tell them they can spend millions and get it to work or spend $200 for a
couple of hard drives to store whatever extra images you need on ($200
includes multiple drives for backups.. and those are not small drives -
figuring at MINIMUM (with a super large image) fitting 10 system images on a
drive.

The fact is, Tablet Edition is not just some extra drivers - there are some
core differences that made it designated as "Tablet Edition", the main one -
it was designed for tablets......

Greetings --

You do realize, don't you, that WinXP Tablet PC Edition is a
_superset_ of WinXP Pro? This means that WinXP Tablet PC Edition can
do everything WinXP Pro can do, plus has the additional functionality
necessary for the proper functioning of a Tablet. By replacing the
original OS with WinXP Pro you've, in affect, downgraded your Tablet
PC to a normal laptop, without gaining anything. What were you trying
to accomplish?

It you want your Tablet PC to work as a Tablet PC, simply restore
the original WinXP Tablet PC Edition operating system.

Your corporation needs to hire an IT staff that can spell PC.
