I am having issues trying to install XP onto a HP/Compaq Deskpro Ex 1.4MHz.
The system came with Windows 98. We can not find the Restore Cd that came
with the system and Compaq does not issue it anymore. We were able to install
98 and update the drivers. After a sucessfull install we trieds to install a
OEM XP but kwept on getting a missing file errors such as oembios file. We
then tried a Full version XP and went through the whole install but wwhen it
tried to boot we got a missing file error. We have also tried to do this with
a clean drive but received the same results. We then tried to install 2000
but received missing file errors again. So as ofd right now we are only able
to install 98. Does anybody out there have a solution?

ASSUMING the hardware platform is stable (ie. RAM, motherboard,
hard drive are all okay), then I'd suspect that your problem has
to do w/ XP upgrade issues. If you *did* do an upgrade, then
write down the mfr names/model numbers of the critical system
drivers (ie. audio, video, network devices, and chipset) and
reinstall XP from scratch. Better still save the XP drivers
onto a CD-R, to make it easier to reinstall them once XP is
redone.
