xp pro let me do this. i do not want to buy 4 xp programs
for one house.

Sorry, but you're out of luck....

It's always been this way with Microsoft Operating Systems...... one purchase of
the software is licensed to one computer only. If you wish to install it on a
second computer, it can, but must be completely removed from the first computer.
Windows XP just enforces this with product activation, which licenses it to that
computer only.

Doesn't matter which version you want to use... XP Home and XP Professional are
licensed to one computer only. If you want, you can purchase one software
package, and then contact Microsoft to purchase additional licenses (and obtain
new product key's for each license).

The additional licenses cost slightly less than the full software package
(emphasis on "slightly"), but at least that will save you a little bit of
money...

I doubt it is necessary to have XP on all 4 computers or even if the
computers will be better with it.
As stated on the retail box; XP Home and Pro is licensed for use on one
computer per CD key and you must agree to these terms to continue setup of
XP. This is not a new policy, as it has been in the EULA since 3.1.

No and no. Neither will. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy
(or one license) for each computer.
There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on *every* version of Windows. The only thing new
with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

for one house.

I didn't want to buy more than one car for one house either, but
I needed them, so I did.
