I installed XP on my computer but that computer in not repairable. I now have
a laptop with Vista and I want to use the XP install disk as a second OS. I
bought the XP disk from Best Buy (not pirated). Is it possible to install and
activate on the new machine? I have a good idea on how to install it but I
need to know if it's legal.

If it's a retail XP Disk and it's only installed on one PC then it's legal

Since the product key is registered with your defunct PC, you cannot reuse
it on a different PC. The activation process will fail. If this is a full
retail version then you can ring the nearest MS office and explain that the
original computer is dead.

Ok. I did have it installed on the computer that doesn't work anymore. now I just want to install it to another instead.

when the o.s. tries to
activate after its installed,
the activation will fail.

however, a phone number
will be provided where a
activation specialist from
india can provide you with
a new activation code to
input manually.

the above is relatively easy
but sometimes burdensome
with less than perfect english
speaking helpers.

------------------

the next question and more importantly
than the above is the whether
or not you are prepared to sacrifice
the license for the vista software.

because if you plan to reinstall
winxp as your default o.s., then
you will have to wipe away the
vista o.s. in its entirety if you are
going to downgrade your machine.

on the other hand, i would suggest
that perhaps you install winxp as
a secondary o.s.

the above requires a little planning
because i am a firm believer in
installing one o.s. per disk and
not per partition on a single disk.

but if you do and because you
have a laptop with a single disk
but with ample room, then perhaps
a program from microsoft.com
called virtual pc would be a
tool to keep your hardware
abstract layer-ing stable, as
it was intended for use by
multiple o.s.'s on a single disk.

lastly, but yet not less of any
importance to the above is that
you should double check with
your laptops maker to ensure
that the machine is fully compatiable
with winxp, because you may also
need to downgrade your device
drivers

Check the part of the OP I marked out on its own line.
If this is a full retail version then you can ring the nearest MS office and
explain that the original computer is dead.

If I understand what the OP wrote, this is not a matter of "if". A retail
box Windows XP install disk is not tied to any computer. I am not aware that
Best Buy ever sold OEM disks; they certainly do not sell "build it yourself"
computer components.

Where in the OP's post is there any indication that the installation
disc is an OEM disc??

He does not say it explicitly. Since the difference is crucial, I had to
mention it.

Thank you for your answers.
I am having another problem and this time it's for posting in these forums.
Even though I'm signed in I can't post a thread or reply to other posts
today. I can only reply to this one because I got it in my email and clicked
the link. I'm signed in but still can't do anything. I don't see a link
anywhere to start a new thread. I have been at this for about an hour. Is
this a practical joke that microsoft is playing or what?

It's likely your POPUP blocker, hold down the CTRL key and click on "New"

I don't know what an OEM is but the Gateway computer that is not repairable came with Windows ME. Years later, I bought and upgraded to XP. Eventually, I bought a laptop with Vista Home Basic. However, I don't like Vista and it's not compatible with some programs that I have, namely, Adobe GoLive. All I want to do is install XP to a partition on my laptop. That's all.
Thank you for your replies. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.
If you'd like more information from me, please let me know.

Best Buy doesn't sell MS OEM installation media.

That's explicit enough.

I know what you mean (and you have a good point!) but it ain't explicit.
It's implied.

Also...I'm unable to find a link to start a new thread do if anyone can help
with that I would appreciate it. I have been looking for hours now and can't
find out how to start a new thread even though I did yesterday, but I can't
remember how i did it. Also when I click on reply, it only replies to a post
and not a thread. Microsoft doesn't make this easy. That's for sure.

Ah... now I see. You will go to any length possible to keep from
admitting you're wrong.

Coulda saved some time by just admitting that.

Not at all - I said "And you have a good point!".

well, if you are using
outlook express to
access and read newsgroup
postings as easy as ready
emails, then the process
is simple.

the outlook buttons under
neath the menu bar will
have a button for "new"
and another for "reply".

"new" will start a new
thread.
