Installing XP Home over XP Pro

I want to install XP Home over XP Professional on a second hand machine I
have - and on which I have installed my usual software - without having to
reinstall and configure everything again.
Is this possible ? I have my own CD for XP Home but I didn't get one with
the second hand machine (why change ? my old one "died").

One cannot install XP Home over XP Pro.
A "clean install" of XP Home is required.

So you purchased XP Pro, then installed it OVER XP Home? Well, of
COURSE you can do this. It is one of the official XP Upgrade paths,
and fully supported by Microsoft.

However, you CAN'T install XP Home over XP Pro, as Carey properly told
you. It must be installed "clean" if XP Pro is already on your
machine.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

The original post was asking to install Windows XP Home over Windows XP Pro.
( Windows XP Home Edition to replace Windows XP Professional Edition.)
* with the caveat that they did not want to have to redo everything else.

Carey's answer was correct. One cannot "upgrade" Windows XP Professional to
Windows XP Home Edition because - it is not an upgrade - it is a downgrade.
You are removing features.

You then answered that you could install Windows XP Professional over
Windows XP Home.
(Windows XP Professional Edition to replace Windows XP Home Edition.)
* with the caveat that you did not have to redo anything - it went fine.

That's fine and dandy - and true, but not what the thread was discussing.
*grin*
