in a duEl between Vista and XP , XP will ALWAYS win hands down everytime

If you want to duAl boot Vista and XP then

The steps are easy IF the you have the drivers for XP for your machine - I
say this because some companies do not support XP at all now.. but I think
Dell would.

First of all BACK UP all critical data... things you need and you wont want
to lose in case a boo-boo happens.

1) Create new parition with a partition manager like acronis, or add a new
second disk

2) install XP on the new parition or second disk

WARNING at this time you will not be able to boot into vista*** ONLY*** XP
The data will have remained intact though.

3) Do one of the following to restore the vista bootloader:

a)Boot into XP and reinstall the vista bootloader with this free app
http://www.vistabootpro.org/

OR

b) Use the vista dvd to repair the vista bootloader so that xp and vista
will be listed.

if you need any clarification post back... I will be happy to help someone
who is going to use XP again :)

Vista is stupid (TM).. it does not always let you shrink the partition the
way you want..

if you have only one disk I suggest you use the latest versions of either:

Acronis disk Director http://www.acronis.com
Paragon disk Manager http://www.paragon-software.com

If you have two disks install XP on the second one. (NOT an external USB
drive!)

Rather than attempting to dual-boot withWindows XP
(a difficult installation procedure when you already have Vista installed)
review the following:

Open Power Options (its in the Control Panel) and then
place a dot next to High Performance.

Next:

Open Device Manager (its in the Control Panel) and then
right-click on your hard drive (under Disk Drives). Click
on "Policies" and make sure there are check marks next to
"Optimize for Performance", "Enable write caching on
the disk", and "Enable advanced performance", then click OK.

Next, perform a Disk Cleanup:

Click on the blue Vista start button and then on the Computer
entry in the Start Menu. Right-click on your hard drive and
select Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files from all users.....
More Options > Clean Up (System Restore and Shadow Copies).

Consider installing addition RAM. If you add an additional
512MB RAM, overall performance will increase significantly.
Visit: http://www.crucial.com/ and run the Crucial System Scanner Tool.

Hi,

I have Dell Inspiron E1405/640M (512MB RAM, 120GB SATA HD & Vista Home
32bit. It's speed bad as Vista require 1GB RAM.

It depends on what apps you run, but for most people, even 1GB isn't
enough and 2GB will provide substantially better performance.

How can I install win XP
(SP2) as duel OS? Please guide me!

If I were in your shoes, I would upgrade the RAM to 2GB, and stay away
from duel-booting (or even dual-booting).

are you sure it will work properly? I wonder if its possible that if i
install xp at 2nd disk i wont be able to run any os at all ;/ i dont want to
lose all my stuff ;p

partition used for recovery process and another forgot). Can I install XP on
D: Drive? If yes, how? If I boot machine and insert XP disk, it will not

I boot with XP disk and it started XP installation process. It shows big
error message on command prompt after finishing process. I don't remember
exact error message; it tryed it few months before...

Why would you recommed that?

Because his performance problem is caused by not having not enough
RAM. Running XP in addition to Vista is not a solution to the problem;
it's just side-stepping the issue.

I would either run Vista in a hardware configuration that's adequate
for it (my personal preference) or run XP if he's not willing to
upgrade the hardware. Dual-booting is a "compromise" that doesn't
really address the issue at all.

Hi Ken,

I understand. I wasn't aware Vista require atleast 1GB RAM now manufacturer
is charging too much to upgrade RAM. so I've no alternative left either to
format or install XP as duel boot. Can I hope for better performance in xp
(512MB RAM) after duel boot?

How can install XP on another partition?

Hi Ken,

You don't have to buy it from the original computer manufacturer. RAM
is available from many sources. Depending on what computer you have,
you may be able to upgrade to 1GB for as little as $30 or so. Check at
www.crucial.com. Their RAM is excellent and they can sell you a match
for what you have.

so I've no alternative left either to
format or install XP as duel boot.

I don't agree. RAM is very cheap. Again, I recommend springing for the
extra RAM--at least to 1GB, and preferably to 2GB.

Can I hope for better performance in xp
(512MB RAM) after duel boot?

Dual (not "duel") booting doesn't improve performance. If you are
asking whether XP will give you better performance with 512MB than
Vista with 512MB, the answer is almost certainly yes.

However, I still don't understand the point of dual booting. Whenever
you run Vista, performance will always be poor, so what's the point of
keeping it, even in a dual-boot situation? If you are not willing to
upgrade the RAM to a level that's satisfactory for Vista, why not get
rid of Vista entirely and just run XP?

As far as I'm concerned, you should choose between these two
alternatives:

1. Upgrade the RAM
2. Downgrade to XP

The "compromise" of dual-booting makes no sense to me.

How can install XP on another partition?

Normally, you create a dual-boot situation by installing the older
operating system first, then the newer one. It can be done the other
way around, but it's harder. Since I don't personally do this, I won't
answer the specific "how to" question, but I'm sure someone else here
can help you.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for to the point answers! Yes, curcuial.com is offering at very
good cost. I read vista is too slow even PC is running with 2GB RAM!

Why I want XP as dual? I'll use ONLY XP if performing well with 512MB RAM.

I don't want to format HD. Incase my laptop won't have driver compaitable
with XP, I might be in trouble. I want vista to remain as such but I'll use
XP (far better than vista).

Can anybody tell me how can I install XP on another partition?

Thanks!
