Cant install vista to sata drive

I've been struggling for the last 4 hours to even get my vista install to
find my Sata drive, when i trialled RC2 i used an IDE drive and this was fine
but i dont have an IDE drive in my system now and the only thing that is
detected is the USB external which it obviously doesn't (and i wouldn't)
install to.

I got the only drivers for Sata/raid from the gigabyte site but doesnt do
anything during the install.

for info i'm using
E6300 Duel Core
Gigabyte DS4
2gb ram
160gb Sata internal (xp installed on, didnt need drivers for xp btw!)
300gb usb external

what do you mean the driver doesnt do anything during install? you need the
"F6" drivers for your raid controller. hit F6 during the install and give
vista the raid driver and it will see the drives attached to it

Have you tried unplugging the external drive?
Your DS4 motherboard uses an Intel P965 chipset, so I'm guessing that it
has two different types of SATA ports (for example, one set supplied by
the native chipset and another set supplied by a supplemental controller
such as Silicon Image). Have you tried switching the connection of the
internal drive to the alternate SATA?

Generally speaking Vista Setup doesn't need to have a SATA driver
supplied to see a simple SATA drive, and you don't mention that you have
a RAID setup on your SATA drives.

If you look in the MS Vista newsgroup on Vista installation, there's a
poster, "Adam Albright," with a board very similar to yours (a GB DQ6)
who mentioned an installation problem with Intel SATA and with a "USB
driver" when trying to install Vista to an internal SATA driver. I'm
not familiar with GB P965 boards, but I deduce that he might have made a
change in the BIOS configuration of his SATA controller. Here's his post:

"You would think that would make a difference. LOL! I build a new system
a couple months back. EVERYTHING had the Vista ready seal, especially
the Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 MB. Guess what... Vista hung on its UBS
driver causing a stop 7B and BSOD. It also nagged about the Intel SATA
controllers, saying in classic Microsoft double talk, that it couldn't
find anything in the way of information about them but said, wink,
wink, your system was ready for upgrade to Vista. I did find new
XP/Vista combination SATA drivers and installed prior, but to be safe
I switched to IDE mode and there they sit, with all the other wacko
problems I'm seeing I'm afraid to turn them on in ACHI mode."

You'll probably want to join that thread to get specific information
from him on how he got Vista to install, especially if you're seeing the
7B stop code he mentions.

Raid is disabled and i'm not using ACHI mode anyway, i've also ran with the
external switched off and this simply gives me no drivers to install to(not
that it will let me anyway to an external). When i installed XP in ran
through fine with the same settings, F6 during setup doesn't do anything
untill i reach the page after entering my key in which i can just select the
'load driver' button.

i have some images in the location below of the setup in bios and what i get
during install..
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/daniel.keefe.106/Stuff/vis/

Also when i've attempted the install from within XP (fresh to a seperate
parition of the same drive) it see's the drives fine and does everything
until i reboot which gives me a BSOD.

I dont get any message about it having problems with a sata controller, i'm
not even sure i'm loading the right driver, i've used the one on the gigabyte
website for my motherboard but the only way i could get vista to see it was
to remove the tick from the 'hide drivers that are not compatible with
hardware on this computer'.

Yes i do have other sata ports so give this a try in the morning, off to
work now :(.

I've not encountered problems installing to SATA drives -- but mostly
I've done that with single SATA drives and set up the BIOS to
'advertise' the SATA drive as IDE -- OS was happy with that.

No problem here with my two SATA drives. I would do a low-level reformat, as
I did, to make sure the partition is done right according to VISTA. Gotta
keep the motor happy eh :)

I have a Novell sysop shirt -- we're the sysops who say FDISK.

I have had problems installing to a sata controller with other sata drives
present, in addition with a disk attached to another controller which doesn't
have any drivers installed, works fine only when disconnecting all other sata
drives during install (plug drives back in after installation, works fine)

I also have the same issues, and to go one step further, after you connect
the other hard drives, and they are recognized, you will be able to use the
drives, however, I used the Vista "Complete PC Backup" function, and save it
to the second internal hard drive without issue, however, you can not restore
the Complete PC Backup, as the drive is not recognized during the
process...... BIG BUG BEWARE......

I had a similar problem, and I apologise if you have already had this advice
as I am new to this newsgroup.

Have you tried installing the required drivers via the Vista setup program?

Have you tried making a Complete PC Backup to your second hard drive and then
restoring it using the Vista DVD???? I suspect it will not work on your
computer either.......... Would be curious to know if you were sucessfull in
this process.....
