Installing Wink2k via external CD-Drive

I have a laptop that requires an external CD-ROM drive in order to run
CDs. I can install WinXP easily on it, but the laptop is somewhat old
(a P3 800 MHz with 256 MB of RAM) and XP runs quite slowly on it.

I have a copy of Win2k but the boot discs don't allow for the USB
drivers (At least for the external CD-ROM drive I have).

Is there a way to pull this off? I've searched around multiple times
and seen other questions, but few actual concrete answers.

Not an answer, but try turning off all winxp 'enhancements', revert to
classic view, no wallpaper/screensaver etc.
Ensure you don't run bloated AV, typically Norton.
Ensure also you have installed drivers from the laptop manu site, and not
relied on win drivers
Win2k will likely be as slow, increase ram to 512mb

I run CachemanXP for optimization (Which has just about everything
disabled possible), no AV really (I'm never online with it), and the
laptop will max out RAM at 384 (It's that old).

You stated that you can install WinXP successfully, which I assume means that
you can boot-up from the USB drive. If that's the case, the Win2K disc should
work in the same manner which eliminates the need to use the four setup floppy
disks.

If the Win2K disc does not boot-up, it's probably an improperly made copy from
an original disc. If so, see if you can have another one made, but this time ask
that it be 1:1 copy, not just a file copy.

BTW, you won't see much difference in the performance of Windows 2000 Pro over
Windows XP Home/Pro.

Hope this helps,

You will need a Windows 2000 Slipstreamed SP3 or later to do it. Even
then it is still a hit and miss thing, it isn't consistent with all USB
drives, it works with some and not with others. If it does install you
might get 0x7b or 0x?e errors when the system tries to reboot.

An alternative would be to install from a flat folder. The procedure is
described here:

http://www.addonics.com/support/faqs/windows_OS_installation.asp

I don't think you can use the DOS drivers there but you can try them and
see if they work. Most likely the Panasonic (aka motto hairu drivers)
would work http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10215.

I was able to install WinXP because the boot disc's for XP have the USB
drivers for the external CD-ROM.

I used the boot disc's from both WinXP and Win2k to try installing it
but, again, failed.

I'll try the way addonics's website describes and see if I can't get it
working.

Windows 2k runs perfectly fine on Pentium 2s with 128MB of ram. As long
as you don't put a whole bunch of "quickstarters" and misc crap you
dont need in the background.

I've run it on such, with 256mb and find it slow
no quick starters, wallpaper etc, clean pc
