installing windows xp pro

i am putting a new hard drive in my pc. i connect the
hard drive, use a boot cd to get to a dos prompt, i place
the xp pro installation disc in the cd drive and run
commands d:\i386

the installation begins then i get an error messege like

"internal error
no place to swap files?"

and then i can't run installation.

any advice how to fix this problem.
