my wife's laptop was stolen recently - but i still have the recovery discs
containing windows xp - can i install windows using that disc on an old
computer that currently uses windows ME? or, once it's been installed on one
computer, will i be prevented from activating it?

Recovery disks are oem for a specific machine,no it will not work,a retail
cd with xp would...

No. The OEM Recovery disks only work with
the original computer they came with. They are
of no further use to you.
