Installing Win XP Home from recovery disks

I'm in a very difficult situation and would appreicate some tips on
how to resolve this.

Toshiba notebook warranty has expired last year.
Using WinXP home.
Bought new 80G H.D. today to replace original 30G.

Can't install WinXP on it! Can hardly do anything!
First (with the help of Toshiba) I needed to update the DMI before the
notebook would even see the recovery disks.

Started the recovery process. The 80 G h.d. was formatted first (with
no option to make partitions). I got as far as the second of three CD
disks when a file read error occurred and the whole recovery process
was aborted.

"Application Error 437
Cannot read from file"

Computer re-booted spontaneously.
Tried the recovery several times and the same file read error occurs
at different times (sometimes on first disk, sometimes on second).

A legitimate Windows user is completely stymied. A simple hardware
upgrade and I'm screwed.

Any suggestions to get this working?

Thanks very much!

Eric

Purchase a new conventional copy of Windows XP Home Edition.

Example:

Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 - OEM

Hi Carey,

Thanks for your reply!

First off I'd like to know why you are recommending purchase of OEM
software rather than genuine MSFT Win XP?
What are the advantages to OEM software other than a cheaper price?

Secondly, I find it remarkable that you'd recommend purchasing a
second copy of Win XP when I already have my first!

That's like saying to someone "Oh I see that you have a problem with
an engine component in your car. The best thing for you to do is buy
another engine."

Hi Carey,

I just visited the second site from above and don't see where
"Changing a Motherboard or Moving a Hard Drive with XP Installed"
applies to my situation?

In my situation I am installing Win XP to a new hard drive.
The entire system is remaining the same, except for the hard drive. In
other words, I have no intention of using my legitimately licenced
Windows software on any other computer except for the one I bought the
licence for.

Some manufacturer's recovery/restore CDs only work with the exact
original hardware configuration. They may not work otherwise.

You could clone the 30GB drive onto the 80GB drive with Trueimage or Ghost.
Make sure the 80GB drive ends up with the active primary partition.
