I have a laptop with windows 2000 and I wish to transfer a
number of files to another laptop which runs windows 98. I
have a backup tape drive but the drivers only work with
windows 98. Is it possible to instal windows 98 onto the
first laptop and then load the backup tape to extract the
files from the machine.

Find Laplink or a similar program - it allows you to do peer-to-peer
file transfers over parallel (printer) cables. Slow, but it works.
Program must be installed on both machines. I don't know if there's a
USB based program for this, but there should be. If such exists, it will
do the job much faster.

I suggest you consider some easier options:
- Connect the two PCs with a network cable
- Buy a USB memory stick. It will appear as an extra drive
on each PC. You can get them for 128 MBytes or more.
