Installing SP4 on domain controllers

Peter

In the past it has been my practice to install Service Packs on DC's first.
Is this still the case with Win2K SP4? We have SP4 installed on some DC's
and not others; is this a good practice, or should I hurry to get SP4
installed on all DC's? I am concerned about the updates being inconsistent
on the DC's.

If you don't experience any issues on the DCs you already installed SP4 you
can go ahead and install it on the rest as well.

Peter,

I agree with Jimmy. It is typically a very good idea to
keep all of your servers at the same Service Pack level.
However, having said that...

1) Be careful with WIN2000 SP4 on Terminal Server. It
can cause some problems - for which there are fixes out
there. It is just a pain to have to find them!

2) Be sure to have a verifiable backup for each Server
before you install SP4. I always proceed with great
trepidation when going from Service Pack X to Service
Pack Y on DCs. On clients I do not really worry. If
everything is set up properly then you are looking at
about 30 minutes to RIS the client back to life!

3) Do this on a weekend so that you will have the two+
days to recover should anything stupid happen.

HTH,

Cary
