I am trying to install Antivirus software on my machine but the installation
fails with an error message that the user does not have administrator rights.
The user I am loged on as is the only user for the machine and also belongs
to the administrators group. I tried creating a new user with admin rights
but I still get the message.

Hi,

Logon with the default administrator account. To access the default
administrator account:

In WinXP Pro, hit ctrl+alt+delete twice at the logon screen and type it in.

In WinXP Home, you must restart and enter Safe mode by hitting F8 at
startup. The administrator logon will be one of the options.

this took me to a login screen but the defult username was the username I
was originally using. I tried changing this to administrator but gave error
message that username or password is wrong.

tried this as well the installation initially proceeds ok without the
administrator rights problem upto a point where it promts to restart computer
to complete installation. When I restart installation does not continue.
tried restarting into both safe mode and normal mode

The problem seems to be with virus/spyware that disable my taskmanager,
sysedit, regedit etc. so I am trying to install a new antivirus/spyware
software

Hi,

Sounds like you're still infected. Here are some stand-alone agents to help
you clean up first:

Also, you may use this free on-line scanner:

Symantec also distributes many free removal tools that are virus-specific:
