When I try to install Service Pack 1 I receive this
message:
The file c:\windows\system32\dllcache\wmploc.dll is open
in in use by another application. Close all other
applications then click Retry.
Since there are no other applications running, I do not
know what to close to get rid of the file that is
interfering with installation. I have tried installing
while offline, I have tried ending various processes in
Task Manager (randomly, because I don't know what is
what) but no luck. Please help with specific instructions
for getting this service pack to install. Please do not
advise me to make sure Messenger isn't running, because
in my experience there is no way to keep Messenger from
running. No matter what I do it keeps coming back. Thanks
in advance for any assistance.

It's easy to stop Microsft Messenger from running. Look under the
tools menu; somewhere in there is an option you can set so that it
doesn't load on startup. I did it to both my boxes last week.

It is a component of Windows Media Player. (Hint - if you want to know,
look for the file in windows\System32 ; r-click - Properties - look on
the version page.)

It is probably to do with WMP access to updates etc on the net and you
need to stop it loading at boot. You need to stop things in general
running in the background while installing SP1.

In Control Panel - Network Connections, right-click the connection to
the Net and Properties - Advanced; make sure the Firewall is enabled
(top box).

Start - Run - MSConfig.exe
On the Services page, check Hide Microsoft and uncheck all the lines
remaining
On the General page uncheck Startup

That should then on exit reboot without any extras running - do the
upgrade, then when it finishes recheck that firewall, and as first
subsequent action go to windows update and get Q817287 and Q824146
security fix, and install

THen put things back in MSConfig. Note that when you reboot there will
be a panel about 'System Configuration and trouble shooting mode'.
Check the 'don't show again' boot and OK.
