I am trying to install a second HD. running XP, have legit copy. i
plugged it in, it works, windows recognizes it, i made it a slave and
the other drive primary in the bios. I see both drives in device
manager. i cant seem to use the drive though. i havent been able to
format/partition it. i dont have a floppy drive to use. is there a
way to format and such without using a boot disk?? everything that i
have read seems that i need a boot disk to run fdisk but i dont have a
boot disk.

Thanx for the help.

Don't use FDISK and you don't need a boot disk.

Make sure you have it hooked up correctly. Make sure
it's listed and enabled in the bios.

Then you have to partition it and then format it.

a. Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage",
then click on "Disk Management"
b. Using the scroll bar, find and select "Disk 1" by
click on the "xxxx GB" unallocated" window.
c. Right click and select "New Partition"
d. Wizard Welcome: (Next)
e. Partition Type: Select "Primary" (Next)
f. Partition Size: Use full size (Next)
g. Assign Drive Letter: Select "D" (Next)
h. Format Partition:

Select": "Format", "NTFS or FAT32", "Default".
Enter a volume name or delete "New Volume" (Next)

i. Confirmation: (Finish)
j. Windows formats drive (30 minutes/80G)

Matt, the thing you need to do is visit a webb sight like
Seagate.com or who ever you bought the drive from. They
have a prograom you can download--a verson of Drive
Wizard, that lets you boot to dos and then steps you
through the partition and format process. Then you will
be able to use the drive. You download the program and it
steps you through the process of making the boot disk so
you can fix your new drive. bob

Why go through all that? XP will do all this for you using Disk
Management.
