the reason I am posting this to Windows XP Usenet is the fact that I have
Windows XP Home Edition already installed.

Is it possible to install Red Hat or some other version of Linux on the SAME
partition as Windows XP AFTER the fact (after Windows XP is already
installed) ? I don't have the money / resources otherwise....

{ this is for a class project }

Are you required to install it on the same partition for the project? If not, then use a good partitioning tool (sorry I have no suggestions but I know they exist) and install it on a new partition.

If there was a free or low priced way to repartition the hard drive without
losing data ? :-\
