installing programs with more than one disk

when I try to install programs with more than one disk the first disk loads
then when asked to insert disk 2 nothing happens after insert and program
eventually is deemed "not responding" any advice? I am using XP home edition
sp2

Two possible solutions. First, don't be so hasty in switching the disks.
Allow some time for the computer to clear any caches and operations that
involve the first disk. Or second, copy the disks to the hard drive and
install the program from it.
